Silk Rd Restaurant - Liverpool

Mummy and Me Editor Michelle and family experience the delights of new Silk Rd restaurant, The Strand, Liverpool City Centre.

Taking a brief look back to the history of ancient network of trade, the popularity of Eastern goods by those in the West was on the rise and a trade route most commonly known as ‘Silk Road’ was established that saw goods being transported along a route from China through India on to Europe.

This ancient network of trade is the inspiration behind Silk Rd Restaurant ‘Pacific to the Med’ with an amazing menu of Tapas that includes dishes inspired by this historic trade route; Vietnamese Snapper, Moroccan Salad, Spanish Chorizo, Turkish Meatballs, Chinese Pork, Massaman Curry…the collection of mouth watering dishes on offer caters for everyone. Surprisingly, the wide range of dishes on offer do compliment one another through their exquisite flavours, therefore enabling you to sample dishes from around the globe in one sitting at Silk Rd (although you’re sure to want to return).

Silk Rd restaurant currently has 2 restaurants in the North West, their original restaurant in Heswall (Wirral) and their most recent 2018 addition based at Beetham Plaza, 25 The Strand, Liverpool City Centre (a 10 minute walk from Liverpool One Shopping Centre, behind James Street Station and the well known ‘Bucket’ art instillation).

There is ramped access for pushchairs and wheelchair users. The restaurant itself has ground level seating and an upstairs seating area. The vibrant décor and thoughtful lighting immediately transports you to a Mediterranean haven. Friendly staff gave a warm reception and were extremely helpful with our 5 young children attentively fetching highchairs for the youngest members of our family and colouring-in sheets and crayons for our older children.

Similarly to the Main Menu, the Silk Rd Children’s Menu offers favourite dishes from across the Silk Road and caters for even the fussiest of little eaters! The youngest member of our family is 7 month old and only in the early stages of weaning. It was great to see that the Starters included suitable early stage finger foods such as Water Melon or Pitta and Houmus. Any parent will know the battles food can bring where children are concerned, the regular prompts of “just try it” or “eat a bit more” were far from our lips as our children finished every crumb on their plates as the Starters were devoured. A trend that continued through the Main courses and Desserts. Our children were also delighted when their drinks arrived in mini tankards decorated with exotic leaves!

Silk Rd restaurant support the Welsh Mountain Zoo in raising money for a new Snow Leopard enclosure. With this in mind, £1 from every children’s main course sold is donated to the Welsh Mountain Zoo for this cause.

The Main Menu on offer from Silk Rd restaurant is certainly difficult to choose from, with each dish sounding appetising. Thankfully the Tapas, Meze approach meant we were able to select an array of dishes between my husband and myself and experience delicious dishes along the Silk Road route; South Indian style Buttered Black Prawns, rich and hearty Massaman Curry, Chinese Pork and Spanish Chorizo and Greek Beef Stifado. I can honestly say that I couldn’t pick a favourite out of our chosen dishes as each one brought it’s own burst of exotic flavours and was truly delicious.

Finishing our Main Course, we were treated again to some delightful options on the Silk Rd Desserts Menu. All dishes came beautifully presented as had the Starters and Main which had gone before them. Silk Rd bar also offers a wide range of global wines, beers, spirits, liqueurs and soft drinks.

In terms of cost, dishes were average pricing but offered a far from average, exceptional flavour. Silk Rd currently have some great offers such as; 2 Tapas Lunch for £8 (12-4pm – perfect for parents heading into town for shopping or children’s daytime activities), Meat Monday (a whopping 50% off 7-10pm), Weekend Brunch (£10 between 10am and 1pm), Prosecco Thursdays (bottomless Prosecco £10 7pm – 10pm – let’s get a babysitter sorted to experience that one!), and a 2 course Sunday Meze & Roast for £15 which runs all day.

If I had to highlight one less positive part of our experience, it would be that unfortunately at present the toilets are upstairs and offer no baby change facility. However, this said, staff were extremely accommodating in finding a suitable place for our youngest daughter to be changed.

Would I recommend Silk Rd restaurant? Without a shadow of doubt! In fact, I am very much looking forward to taking my family there again. Friendly staff, great atmosphere, child-friendly (baby change facility aside) and delicious food - To coin the phrase of a favourite childhood character, Silk Rd Restaurant is “practically perfect in every way!”.
